Yedurumondi (15.83772,80.887996) is a small rural
community in the Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh. The village is located on
the island of Diviseema in the delta of the
Krishna River. The island has about 10,000 inhabitants, catering 2,100 families
in ten different
villages. The 650 families of Yedurumondi live 200m
away from the Krishna River and about 2km from the seashore. The village is connected to the mainland by a ten-minute ferry trip
and a kutcha(dirt) road. Around two third of the
villagers engage in agriculture, they are
only planting
rice as other crops have not been successful on the island. The other
inhabitants engage in fishing, livestock (goats for dairy) or are wage labourers who migrate for shorter or
longer periods when there is no work in the fields.
